AI Overviews: What Actually Drives Inclusion (Based on Real Client Data)

After tracking AI Overview appearances across 24 clients, here's what the data shows about what gets you cited — and what doesn't matter as much as people think.

Everybody has a theory about AI Overviews. Most of them are based on one or two data points and a lot of speculation. I’ve been tracking AI Overview appearances across 24 active client accounts since the feature rolled out broadly, and the patterns are clearer than most people think.

Here’s what the data actually shows.

What Correlates With Inclusion

After pulling GSC data, manual SERP checks, and Ahrefs tracking across hundreds of queries, three factors show up consistently in clients that get cited:

1. Entity clarity — Sites with clean structured data (LocalBusiness, Organization, Service schema) get cited significantly more often than unstructured sites on equivalent queries. Google needs to know what you are before it can confidently summarize you.

2. Direct answer format — Pages that lead with a clear, declarative answer to the implied query get pulled more often than pages that bury the answer in narrative. The first 100 words matter more than anything else on the page.

3. Topical authority, not domain authority — I’ve seen DA 20 sites get cited over DA 60 competitors on niche queries where the lower-authority site had deeper, more specific content. AI Overviews appear to care less about overall domain strength than about relevance to the specific question.

What Doesn’t Seem to Matter Much

  • Page speed (beyond a basic threshold)
  • Word count — longer is not better
  • Social signals
  • Backlink count (topical relevance wins here)

The Practical Takeaway

If you want AI Overview appearances, focus on: structured data, direct answer formatting in your opening paragraphs, and building out enough content depth that Google trusts you own the topic.

That’s it. The rest is noise.
